By contrast to abstracts, candid shots have always fascinated me. Not (I would like to think) due to some deep seated voyeristic tendancies, with all the negative connotations that immediatley spring to mind, but rather from the joy of exploring the range and true nature of what people are.
In which case you might be wondering where my section on portriats can be found, if I have this facination for people. Well facinated as I might be, I don't like people.
My explanation (or justification to myself perhaps) is that a portrait is a false image of the self. It is the person portrayed with consious thought as to the impression that the viewer will take away. Sometimes that comes from the subject, and sometimes from the photographer, but either way this "interferes" with the essence of the real person, even to the extent that the image becomes a cliche, whether intended or (often) not.
With a candid shot, sure there will be some interpretation on my part in how the image is presented that you could argue delivers the same "interference", but for me this is just the framing or placing on context of the subject to focus the attention on the true nature of the human state. And this is where also I see a difference between a portrait and a candid shot. A portrait is naturally of someone, a specific individual - the person is the subject of the photograph. With a candid shot the person is incidental, part of the background - the emotion is the subject.
So to return to my statement above, "I don't like people". Rather I don't like people when you put them under a spotlight (be that literally or figuratively). So there, and here you have it, candid ...
It is only of late that I have taken an interest in abstract images in photography. I have always been intriegued by abstract paintings, but it was with the purchase of some macro equipment that I discovered the joys of this style in photography.
Now as it happens none of the abstract images I present on this site are macro shots, my current desire for abstract images is that they should be only just over the threshold of the subject matter being immediately recognisable. With macro shots tending to provide a window on a world we don't normally deal with in detail, I find that this presents an additional barrier to comprehension that pushes away the moment of "Ah, that's what it is!" to the point that the images lose the impact I am looking for.
So here then (for now) are images taken at more or less standard focal lengths which I have had to use the original of zoom techniques (a pair of legs) to ensure the necessary framing to make the subjects flip into the realm of abstract ...
